Juan Manuel Buergo, new National President of the SSVP Spain
The new National President of Spain, Juan Manuel Buergo Gómez, member of the Conference ‘San Isidro’, in Madrid, took office of his service position at the head of the Spanish Vincentians on 30 September 2017. The solemn Eucharist, had special and emotional moments, among which we highlight the takeover of the service positions of the new National Board, made up of the following fellow members:
- President: Juan Manuel Buergo
- Honorary President: Concepción de Tuero
- Vice-president: María Luisa Téllez
- Secretary: Rosario Granda
- Treasurer: José Sánchez
- Religious Advisor: F. Santiago Azcárate
- Members: Carmen Garcés, Concepción Sanz, Andrés Merchán, Francisco Holgado, Miguel Hombre, Joan Sas
At the end of the Eucharist, a letter of Renato Lima de Oliveira, International President General of the SSVP, was read. The letter was addressed to the SSVP of Spain and especially to Marisa Téllez, who left her position at the head of the Entity, and to Juan Manuel Buergo, who starts his path of service as National President of the Spanish Vincentians. Renato Lima emphasized his personal friendship with Juan Manuel, defining it as "intense, loyal and true". He also highlighted the qualities that he sees in the new National President of Spain: "always active, tireless, idealistic, exciting, lover of good literature, efficient, worried about the quality of the Vincentian practice, an expert on Ozanam and the other founders; In short, an ideal President for this position of high responsibility. His enthusiasm can wake up new talents and setting new courses for the benefit of the Conferences and their assisted people".
In this letter, the International President General remembered two biblical passages that should always be an essential reading for all those who exercise functions of pastoral and missionary service in the Church. Namely, Mark 9, 35: "If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all"; and 1 Tm 6, 14: "Keep the full commandment without spot."
To close the event, the new National President of Spain gave a speech in which he thanked all the support received. This support led him and his team to accept this position of service, as well as the responsibility assumed, in order to answer, in the best possible way and with all his effort, this challenge at the head of the Spanish SSVP.
The figures of St. Vincent de Paul and of Blessed Frederic Ozanam are strongly felt by Juan Manuel Buergo, as well as the deeply rooted collaboration with the Vincentian Family. He is firmly convinced that the network of charity must exist not only towards the people assisted by the SSVP, but also among the fellow members of our beloved conferences. His motto for this Presidency is contained in this quote from the Blessed Frederic Ozanam:
“Tears of joy come to my eyes, when I find so far our little family, always small for the discretion of its works, but great by the blessing of God. Although speaking different languages, we always shake hands with such a fraternal cordiality that we could very well be recognized by the same signal that identified the early Christians: see how they love each other! ".
