Brother Renato Lima de Oliveira, 16th President General, attended and participated at the inauguration ceremony of the new president of the National Council of Brazil, Brother Cristian Reis da Luz, and his Board of Directors, held last 03 September 2017 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Around 600 people attended the gathering. The Holy Mass was celebrated by Father Alexandre Nahass CM, Spiritual Adviser of the National Council of Brazil. In his homily, he focused on the mission of the Vincentians in the struggle to fight for the dignity of the poor.
President Renato Lima expressed his special thanks to the outgoing president, Sister Emilia Fernandes Figueiró Jerónimo and the members of her board. “You have made a significant contribution to the growth of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Brazil in various sectors and departments, which have produced innumerable fruits for our organization”, said Renato Lima.
Concerning brother Cristian, the President General emphasized: “Cristian is a person extremely prepared for the role he is assuming today and we place great expectations on him. The Brazilian Council is in good hands”, he then affirmed.
The International President gave the National Council of Brazil a pilgrim image of Ozanam with a relic. This image will visit all the local Councils, parishes and Conferences around the country.
In his first speech after being elected, Brother Cristian said he will be tireless in the fight for the rights of the poor and will be next to the Vincentians, dedicated to attend to their needs.
The term of Brother Cristian is four years, and will last until September 2021. The motto of his term is “In the network of charity, serving our masters, the Poor”. With this, the General Council is looking forward to a successful management of the new President, together with his National Team, in the service of the poor.
