Bangladesh : Purchase of 8,500 blankets for the winter
- Council / Country : Bangladesh
- Holder organisation : National Council of Bangladesh
- Field of work : Health
- Budget : 24 500 euros
- Year commenced : 2013
- Beneficiaries : Deprived, vulnerable people affected by the cold
Over the last few years in Bangladesh some regions have been affected by tough winters. During 2013, the temperature has dropped even lower than usual in a country where it is normally 40 degrees celsius. Homes are made of bamboo, material that offers no protection from the cold and the population is not equipped with warm clothes. The most vulnerable people (small kids, elderly, poor people) have been the first victims of this bad weather, dying from pneumonia.
Faced with this worrying situation, the National Council of Bangladesh has set up a project, approved by the CIAD, in order to finance the acquisition of 8,500 blankets. Purchased in situ for a reasonable price, these blankets have been printed with the SSVP logo and sent in batches to the most affected regions. The regional Councils have taken on the responsibility of distributing the blankets to the families. One blanket can protect 2 people.
